AUGUSTIN (FRANCISCO) NUIBO (MARSEILLE, BOUCHES-DU-RHÔNE, 01-05-1874 – NICE, ALPES-MARITIMES, 04-1948)

 

 

 

 

He began his musical education at the Conservatoire of Marseille, where he studied under the bass Jean-Baptiste Faure. He further refined his craft in Paris, studying with the renowned tenor Victor Capoul. He made his debut in 1900 at the Grand Opéra of Paris, taking on the role of Fischer in Rossini’s Guillaume Tell (Wilhelm Tell).

From 1900 to 1908, he was a regular performer at the Grand Opéra, where he participated in various productions, including the 1907 premiere of Fernand Le Borne’s opera La Catalane. During the 1904-05 season, he joined the Metropolitan Opera in New York, making his debut as Turiddu in Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana. During his time at the Met, he also participated in a North American tour. At the request of the Metropolitan Opera’s management, he adopted the stage name Francisco Nuibo, under which he performed with notable success, particularly in the popular Sunday Night Concerts.

In 1908, he became a member of the Opéra-Comique in Paris and later performed at the Théâtre Lyrique. His career also included a significant appearance at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in 1913, where he sang in the opera Les trois masques by Isidore de Lara.

Throughout his career, he made guest appearances at prestigious venues such as Covent Garden in London, as well as in Lisbon, Mexico City, San Francisco, and Havana. He also had an influential presence in the major provincial theaters of France.

In 1923, he founded a conservatoire in Paris, located in the Montmartre district, where he dedicated himself to teaching the next generation of singers.
