EDOUARD KRIFF (ALGIERS, AUGUST 3, 1905 – PARIS, MARCH 29, 1966)

 

 

 

 

His real name was Real name Joseph Edouard Krihiff. He studied under Mme. Carrère-Xanroff in Paris and made his debut in 1935, initially appearing in operettas and musical comedies. He began his operatic career in 1937 at the Marseille Opera House, where his first role was Jean in Massenet’s Hérodiade. After successful engagements at the Lyon Opera and other provincial stages in France, he was engaged by the Paris Grand Opéra in 1938. His debut role there was Samson in Saint-Saëns’s Samson et Dalila.

Over the next two decades, he enjoyed a distinguished career at both the Paris Grand Opéra and the Opéra-Comique. His principal roles included Radamès in Verdi’s Aida, Cavaradossi in Puccini’s Tosca, Julien in Charpentier’s Louise, Lohengrin, the title role in Massenet’s Werther, and Hoffmann in Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann. From 1957 onward, he worked as a stage director at the Opéra-Comique.
