EMMANUEL LAFARGE (PARIS, 08/07/1962 – PARIS, 15/12/1911)

 

 

 

 

After completing his training at the Conservatoire National de Paris, he made his operatic debut in 1889 at the opera theatre in Rouen. Notably, he sang the role of Samson in the French premiere of Camille Saint-Saëns’ Samson et Dalila on March 3, 1890. This performance, following the opera’s world premiere in Weimar in 1877, marked a significant moment in his early career.

From 1890 to 1892, he was engaged by the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, one of the most prestigious opera houses in Europe. Afterward, he joined the opera house in Lyons, further solidifying his reputation as a leading tenor.

His talent led him to La Scala in Milan for the 1894-95 season, where he performed in the title role of Sigurd by Ernest Reyer and reprised his role as Samson in Samson et Dalila. His performances at La Scala, particularly in these demanding roles, were met with great acclaim.

In 1896, he also made guest appearances at the Paris Opéra (Grand Opera), performing once again as Samson and also taking on roles in Wagner’s Die Walküre.

Throughout his career, he became particularly noted for his interpretations of Wagner’s works, with roles such as Tristan in Tristan und Isolde and Siegfried in Siegfried becoming central to his repertoire. His performances across the leading opera stages in the French provinces were marked by his powerful voice and dramatic presence, particularly in the challenging Wagnerian roles that earned him widespread recognition.

His career was a testament to his versatility and skill, bridging both the French and German operatic traditions with notable success.
