EUGÈNE DE CREUS (1880 – 1952)
He was French by birth but grew up in Belgium. In 1908, he made his debut at the Théâtre Royal in Antwerp, where he achieved his first successes over two years. In 1911, he joined the ensemble of the Opéra-Comique in Paris, debuting as Laërte in Mignon by A. Thomas. He performed at this opera house for nearly 25 years, singing in twenty premières. He also appeared as a comprimario.
On the one hand, he sang roles like Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, Léopold in La Juive by Halévy, Tonio in La Fille du régiment, Pylade in Iphigénie en Tauride by Gluck, Wilhelm Meister in Mignon by Thomas, Grieux in Massenet’s Manon, and Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly. On the other hand, he performed roles such as Dancaïre in Carmen, Yamadori in Madama Butterfly, Spoletta in Tosca, and Beppe in Pagliacci. He also appeared at the Opéra-Comique in the premiere of Henri Rabaud’s Marouf in two small roles (May 15, 1914).
He retired from the stage in 1935 but continued to perform as an operetta singer in the French provinces and Belgium until 1939. He often appeared on stage with his daughter, soprano Hélène (Eliane) de Creus. He later settled in Paris.
