GEORGES NANSEN (LOUIS NANSEN) (17/12/1878 – 25/02/1952)

 

 

 

 

Georges-Louis Noël, known professionally as Georges Nansen and occasionally as Louis Nansen, was a French operatic tenor active primarily in the early 20th century. He began his career under the name Georges Nansen and also made several recordings using the name Louis Nansen. Between 1907 and 1914, he performed as a comprimario at the prestigious Grand Opéra in Paris. His debut at the opera house was in La Catalane by François de Le Borne.

However, his burgeoning career was interrupted by the outbreak of World War I, during which he served as a front-line soldier and was awarded a medal for bravery in recognition of his service. After the war, Nansen resumed his career at the Grand Opéra, where he continued to perform until 1920. In addition to his performances in Paris, he also appeared on several operatic stages across the French provinces.

His repertoire included a variety of roles, such as Melot in Tristan und Isolde, Mime in Das Rheingold, Tybalt in Roméo et Juliette, Jonas in Le Prophète, and Shababarim in Salammbô. Despite being primarily a comprimario singer, Nansen’s versatility and dedication to his craft earned him respect within the operatic community.
