AUGUSTINE-LÉON BEYLE (LYON, FRANCE, 28 FEBRUARY, 1871 – LYON, FRANCE, 17 JULY, 1922)
He made his debut in 1897 at the Grand Opéra in Paris as Don Ottavio in Mozart’s Don Giovanni. In 1898, he was engaged at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, where he remained until 1914. One of his greatest successes came in 1903 with Massenet’s Werther, and in 1905, he performed as Werther in the 100th performance of the opera at the Opéra-Comique.
At the Opéra-Comique, he appeared in several premieres, including:
La fille de Tabarin by Pierné (January 20, 1901)
La fille de Roland by Rabaud (March 16, 1904)
Aphrodite by Camille Erlanger (March 24, 1906)
La Lépreuse by Silvio Lazzari (February 7, 1912)
La Sorcière by Erlanger (December 10, 1912)
Le Carilloneur by Xavier Leroux (March 20, 1913)
In 1908, he was part of the premiere ensemble of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Snegourotchka. In 1910, he substituted for the ill Enrico Caruso at a guest performance of the Metropolitan Opera in Paris, appearing as Cavaradossi in Puccini’s Tosca alongside Geraldine Farrar and Antonio Scotti.
After retiring from the stage, Beyle taught singing in Paris and later in Lyon, the city where he was born and where he passed away.
