MARIO ALTÉRY (NICE, 12 SEPTEMBER, 1892 – HYÈRES, 13 MARCH, 1974)
His real name was Philippe Altare. He studied singing in Paris and made his debut in 1934 at the Opernhaus in Liège. In 1935, he was engaged by the Opéra-Comique in Paris, where he made his debut as Gérald in Delibes’ Lakmé. During the following ten years, he appeared there in such roles as Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Alfredo in La Traviata, Rodolfo in La Bohème, Cavaradossi in Tosca, Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana, Des Grieux in Manon, Werther in Werther, Nadir in Les pêcheurs de perles, Don José in Carmen, Vincent in Mireille, Wilhelm Meister in Mignon, and Julien in Louise.
From 1940 to 1946, he also performed at the Paris Opéra, where he appeared, among other roles, as Faust, Roméo in Roméo et Juliette, and Mylio in Le Roi d’Ys. In addition to guest appearances at leading provincial theaters throughout France, he also sang in Switzerland, Romania, and Italy—appearing, among other engagements, at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples during the 1947–1948 season. His career lasted until the early 1950s.
