PAUL-HENRI VERGNES (LAGRASSE, 11 MAY, 1905 – PARIS, 21 APRIL, 1974)

 

 

 

 

His voice was discovered by the patron Castellan de Beauxhoste, and from 1924 to 1928, he studied at the Conservatoire National in Paris. He made his debut at the Paris Grand Opéra in 1929 as Faust in C. Gounod’s Faust. He developed a notable career there, including his role as Jopas in a complete performance of H. Berlioz’s Les Troyens in 1929. From 1933, he was also part of the ensemble at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, where he made his debut in the title role of Les Contes d’Hoffmann. He achieved great success with this role in Amsterdam in 1932 under Pierre Monteux. In 1938, at the Opéra-Comique, he participated in the world premiere of Darius Milhaud’s Esther de Carpentras. His guest performances took him to major stages across France and Western Europe. He later worked as a singing teacher in Paris and was married to the singer Lise Dalignan.
