ALBERTO BACHMANN (GENEVA, 20 MARCH, 1875 – NEUILLY-SUR-SEINE, 24 NOVEMBER, 1963)

 

 

 

 

Alberto Abraham Bachmann was born in Geneva on 20 March 1875 to Russian parents. He began his musical studies with Émile Shillio at the Lille Conservatory where he graduated with the Premier prix in 1885. He later perfected himself at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels with Eugène Ysaÿe. Then he studied with César Thomson, Jenő Hubay , Adolf Brodskij , Henri Willem Petri. After a series of tours in Europe, he moved to Paris in 1898 and married the pianist Marie Reveilhac. Bachmann was among the violinists who most impressed Maurice Clerjot in Paris at the beginning of the twentieth century. Bachmann, in addition to his concert activity, dedicated himself to musicology, in particular the history, violin making and teaching of the violin. His first book was Le violon, lutherie-œuvres-biographies (1906), then he published an essay on Niccolò Paganini in the periodical «Mercure Musical» (1907/08); followed by Les grands violinistes du passé (1913) and Gymnastique à l’usage des violonistes pour le développement de la main gauche (1914). After several tours of Europe, he made his first tour of the United States in 1913, and settled in New York. In addition to his concert activity, he taught the violin privately and collaborated with two musical periodicals, «Musical America» and «The Musical Observer». In 1922 Bachmann returned to Europe, but maintained contacts with the United States since he published Encyclopedia of the Violin in New York in 1925. He settled in Neuilly-sur-Seine near Paris devoting himself to teaching. Among his students we remember Jean Reveilhac. Little by little he thinned out the concert scene, ceasing all activity in 1939. He composed three concertos, sonatas, cadenzas, transcriptions and more for his instrument. He died on 24 November 1963 in Neuilly-sur-Seine.
