Henri Merckel was born in Paris; he was a child prodigy; he held his first public performance at age of six. A pupil of Guillaume Rémy at the Paris Conservatory, he won the Premier prix in 1914. The war delayed the start of his career. He was a member of the l’Orchestre des Concerts Straram and then of the Paris Opéra (1924). From 1930 to 1960 he became the shoulder of the Paris Opéra. He was also the shoulder of the Orchester de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire (1930-1935). He is interested in both ancient music (he was the first to record Couperin and Purcell) and modern works (Jean Hubeau, Jean Rivier and Florent Schmitt). After teaching at the Fontainebleau Conservatory, he was appointed professor at the Paris Conservatory (1959).
