FELIX ROBERT MENDELSSOHN (BERLIN, GERMANY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1896 – BALTIMORE, USA, MAY 15, 1951)

 

 

 

 

He was born in the family of the composer Ludwig Mendelssohn. At the age of 8 he was admitted to the Stern Conservatory in Berlin. At 10, he made his debut as a soloist and successfully toured Europe. After the Nazis came to power in Germany, he played in the string quartet of the Jewish Cultural Association (Judischer Kulturbund) under the direction of Hans Basserman. In 1936 he fled from Germany, having managed to cross the border with Switzerland on a bicycle, hiding in his bag of potatoes his cello by Stradivarius. In 1937 he emigrated to the United States and was admitted to the University of New York as a professor of cello. Conducted by string and chamber orchestras. Since 1942 – the first cello of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He died suddenly.
