JULIUS VOM SCHEIDT (BREMEN, 29. 3. 1877 – HAMBURG, 10. 12. 1948)

 

 

 

 

Brother of the renowned singers Selma vom Scheidt (1874–1959) and Robert vom Scheidt (1879–1964), he made his debut in 1899 at the Cologne Opera House, where he remained until 1916. During his tenure there, he took part in the world premiere of Emanuel Moor’s opera Die Pompadour (1902) and in the world premiere of Julius Bittner’s opera Der Abenteurer (1913). From 1916 to 1924, he was engaged at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, where he participated in the world premiere of Friedrich Koch’s opera Die Hügelmühle in 1918. From 1924 to 1930, he served as principal baritone at the Hamburg City Theatre (later the Hamburg State Opera), achieving particular acclaim as Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and as the title role in Verdi’s Falstaff. After 1930, he continued to appear as a guest artist and was also active as a teacher.

His recordings include releases for Beka (Cologne, 1905–06, including duets with Selma vom Scheidt), HMV, Polyphon, and Zonophone (Bayreuth, 1904).
