KARL ARMSTER (KREFELD, GERMANY DECEMBER 4, 1883 – HEBRON-DAMNITZ, POLAND JULY 4, 1943)

He made his debut at the Stadttheater in Essen in 1906. He then appeared at the Komische Oper in Berlin from 1907 to 1911, at the Stadttheater in Elberfeld from 1911 to 1912, and at the Stadttheater (Opernhaus) in Hamburg from 1912 to 1917. In 1914, he performed as Amfortas in Parsifal and as Gunther in Götterdämmerung at the Bayreuth Festival. In 1916, he made guest appearances at the Vienna Court Opera and sang at the Leipzig Opera House in 1911. From 1917 to 1925, he was a member of the Berlin State Opera, where he sang the role of Barak in the premiere of Frau ohne Schatten by R. Strauss in 1920. In 1930, he performed in the premiere of the opera Christoph Colomb by Darius Milhaud. In 1913, he made a guest appearance in Amsterdam as Jochanaan in Salome. He married Ilse Freiin von Gamp-Massauen in 1922 and later lived at Hebron-Damnitz Castle near Stolp in Pomerania. From 1925, he gave only guest appearances. In the 1930-1931 season, he appeared at the State Opera and at the German Opera in Berlin. He retired from the stage in 1931.
