Theodor Lattermann, after initial studies in Frankfurt am Main, was vocally trained by the renowned tenor Andreas Dippel. Lattermann debuted on stage at 19 and showcased artistic versatility, also working as a painter and sculptor. His official operatic debut came in 1907 at the Stadttheater in Barmen, followed by a significant engagement with the Stadttheater of Hamburg in 1908, where he remained a member for the rest of his career. His portrayal of Gurnemanz in the Hamburg premiere of Parsifal in 1914 stands as a notable highlight.

Lattermann’s career featured successful guest appearances between 1909 and 1910 at prestigious venues, including the Gura Opera in Berlin, the Cologne Opera House, Amsterdam, and the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels. During the 1920-1921 season, he also performed at the Vienna State Opera. From 1922 to 1924, he embarked on an extensive North American tour with the German Opera, joined by his wife, the esteemed contralto Ottilie Metzger-Lattermann, to whom he had been married since 1911. On this tour, he performed key roles such as Telramund in Lohengrin and Figaro in The Marriage of Figaro and even appeared with the German Opera Company at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

Lattermann and his wife participated in the American premiere of Eugen d’Albert’s opera Die toten Augen with the German Opera in Chicago in 1924. Unfortunately, his promising career was cut short in the fall of 1925 by a severe and incurable illness.
