Description

ADOLF LIEBAN (EIBENSCHÜTZ, 5 JULY, 1867 – BERLIN-SCHÖNEBERG, 14 APRIL, 1924)

He came from a Jewish family of cantors. Like his brothers Julius, Siegmund, and Adalbert Lieban, he became a well-known singer. He performed primarily on Berlin operetta stages but was also active as an opera and concert singer. He even made occasional guest appearances at the Berlin Court Opera and undertook extensive teaching activities in Berlin.

He became known primarily through a wealth of recordings, the first of which appeared on Zonophone shortly after the turn of the century. Many titles followed on the HMV, Beka, and DGG labels. Most of these recordings are light songs, but there are also more musically demanding pieces. He gained fame as a member of a men’s quartet, the Lieban Quartet, named after him, and whose records are also available.

He was the founder of the Lyrophon record company, which released recordings of his voice between 1904 and 1906. The four Lieban brothers performed as a quartet on a Lyrophon record. Other recordings include those on Artist Phonograph Reels (around 1900), Polyphon, and Vox.
