RUDOLF MOEST (KARLSRUHE, 22 APRIL, 1872 – VIENNA, 28 APRIL, 1919)

 

 

 

 

He was the son of the sculptor Friedrich Moest. He studied under Franz Krückl in Strasbourg and with Carl Hermann in Frankfurt a. M. He made his debut in 1892 in Strasbourg as Ruggiero in Halévy’s La Juive. Until 1896, he sang in Strasbourg, and from 1896 to 1914 he was a respected member of the Hoftheater in Hannover. In 1914, he was engaged by the Hofoper in Vienna, where he had already made guest appearances in 1900. There he achieved one of his greatest successes as Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg; he also appeared in 1898 in the premiere of Theodor Gerlach’s opera Matteo Falcone.

At the Bayreuth Festival of 1909, he sang King Heinrich in Wagner’s Lohengrin and Titurel in Parsifal. He made guest appearances in Berlin (1903–1910), Dresden (1906), Munich, Stuttgart, Prague (1907, 1909), Karlsruhe (1902), Weimar, Frankfurt a. M. (1900), and Cologne (1905–1908). Even on the day of his death, he appeared in Vienna as Lothario in Thomas’s Mignon.

His repertoire included Kaspar in Der Freischütz, Marke in Tristan und Isolde, Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Leporello in Don Giovanni, Jacob in Méhul’s Joseph, Méphistophélès in Gounod’s Faust, Escamillo in Carmen, and Rocco in Fidelio.
