Wilhelm Hopf studied from 1885 to 1889 at the Weimar Conservatory with Leopold Grützmacher (1835–1900). He initially worked as a cellist in Mannheim. From 1891 to 1893 he worked as a soloist at the Görlitzer Stadttheater. From 1895 to 1914 he worked as a soloist at the City Theater in Königsberg. At that time he played in the Max Brode String Quartet and taught at the Emil Kühns Conservatory in Königsberg. From 1902 to 1914 he played in the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra. After the First World War , Hermann Hopf continued to perform as an ensemble player, including in the early 1920s in the piano trio with Käthe von Gizycki (piano) and Gabriele Wietrowetz (violin) as well as in the string quartet by Gustav Havemann (Gustav Havemann, 1st violin; Georg Kniestädt , 2nd violin; and Hans Mahlke, viola). In the latter ensemble, he performed the world premieres of the Serenade Op. 4 by Ernst Krenek and the string quartet Op. 4 by Alois Hába at the first festival for new music in Donaueschingen (1921). He wrote elegies for cello and orchestra (premiered by Gregor Piatigorsky) and a number of smaller chamber music works.
