Description
KARL (ALSO CARL) GUSTAV ADOLF HUGO DECHERT (BERLIN-SCHÖNEBERG, NOVEMBER 25, 1900 – BERLIN-SCHÖNEBERG, MARCH 17 1962)
Karl Dechert was the son of the cellist and chamber musician Hugo Dechert (1860–1923) and his wife Bertha Johanne Marie Henriette, née Syvarth (1867–1943). He received cello lessons from his father while still at the Hohenzollern School. From autumn 1916 to spring 1918 he studied at the Berlin University of Music with Hugo Becker and Otto Niedermayr. In 1918 Dechert became a member of the orchestra of the German Opera House in Berlin-Charlottenburg, and in 1923 he moved to the Staatsoper Unter den Linden as his father’s successor, where he was appointed prelude/solo cellist in 1924. He remained associated with this house until the early 1960s. From the 1920s, Dechert also worked as a cello teacher at the Klindworth-Scharwenka Conservatory. In chamber music he worked with Emil Kornsand, Karl Reitz and Rudolf Deman in the Deman String Quartet. Dechert joined this quartet as successor in 1921 after the death of Heinz Beyer. He performed with his brother Fritz Dechert, as well as with Paul Treff and Paul Walter in the cello quartet of the Berlin State Opera. This quartet recorded Georg Goltermann’s Andante Religioso for the Electrola label. Much later (1943) he gave concerts on behalf of the Prussian Academy of Arts as a member of the Kalki String Quartet of the Berlin State Opera together with Max Kalki and Hans Reinicke (violin) and Richard Jauch (viola) with members of the Berlin Staatskapelle among others in the hall of the Berliner Singakademie. From 1922 onwards, with Rudolf Deman (violin) and Otto Urack (piano), he recorded numerous chamber music works and also event-related recordings such as Christmas records on shellac recordings from the Vox label. Karl Dechert was awarded the honorary title of chamber virtuoso.
