Description
EVA LIEBENBERG (STETTIN, POMERANIA, GERMANY, FEBRUARY 15, 1890 – HILVERSUM, NOORD-HOLLAND, NETHERLANDS, NOVEMBER 18, 1971)
Her real name was Gertrud Lina Hedwig Liebenberg. She studied singing with Hugo Rasch in Berlin and made her debut at the Thalia Theater in Berlin during the 1920–21 season. From 1921 to 1923, she was engaged at the Coburg State Theater. She then settled in Berlin, where she became primarily known as a distinguished concert and oratorio contralto, enjoying considerable success both in Germany and abroad.
In 1933, she performed Brahms’s Alto Rhapsody in a concert at La Scala in Milan. She also appeared as a guest artist, notably as Erda in Wagner’s Ring cycle — at the Bayreuth Festival (1927–28), the Dresden State Opera (1934), in Königsberg (1936), in Berlin (1934–38), and again in Cologne (1940). Despite her stage appearances, concert work remained the central focus of her career.
Because of her Jewish heritage, she faced severe difficulties in Germany after 1933 and eventually emigrated to the Netherlands. There she survived the persecution of Jews following the occupation in 1940 and worked as a teacher in Hilversum from 1947 onwards.
