ELISE VON CATOPOL (? 1887 – BERLIN, 1941)

She descended from a Romanian family, and her real name was Elisa Catapolu. She received her education in Milan, Paris, and at the Vienna Conservatory. In 1906, she made her debut in Vienna as a concert singer. Her stage career began in the 1907-1908 season at the Theater in Troppau (now Opava). From 1908 to 1911, she performed at the Deutschen Theater in Prague, and from 1911 to 1914, she was a member of the Hofoper in Dresden.

During the 1914-1919 seasons, she sang at the Opernhaus in Wrocław, where she took part in the premiere of Eros und Psyche by Polish composer Lubomir Różycki on March 10, 1917. In Wrocław, she also married the lyric tenor Hans Batteux (1885-1961), after which she performed under the name Elise von Catopol-Batteux.

Following World War I, both artists were engaged by the Staatsoper in Berlin, where she performed from 1919 to 1925. She later appeared as a concert soloist and continued her stage career at the Deutschen Opernhaus in Berlin, performing during the 1929-1931 and 1933-1940 seasons.

Her repertoire included roles such as Musetta in La Bohème, Violetta in La Traviata, Marguerite de Valois in Les Huguenots, Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana, and Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly.
