HEDWIG HEDY IRACEMA-BRÜGELMANN, NÉE HÄNSEL (PORTO ALEGRE, BRAZIL, 16 AUGUST, 1879 – KARLSRUHE, 9 APRIL, 1941)

 

 

 

 

She was born to German parents and studied at the Cologne Conservatory. On the advice of composer and conductor Max von Schillings, she pursued a career as a stage performer after initially working as a concert singer. (Her stage name was an anagram of the word “America”). In 1910, she made her debut at the Stuttgart Court Opera as Elisabeth in “Tannhäuser.” In 1913, she made a guest appearance at London’s Covent Garden Opera as the Marschallin in R. Strauss’s “Rosenkavalier,” a role she also sang at the Zurich City Theater in 1917. Until 1917, she enjoyed great success at the Stuttgart Opera; there she also sang the title role in the premiere of Max von Schillings’ opera “Mona Lisa” on September 26, 1915. In 1916, she performed this role in Amsterdam. From 1917 to 1920, she was a member of the Vienna Court Opera, and from 1920 to 1926, she was engaged at the Karlsruhe State Theatre. She was then forced to abandon her career for health reasons. In 1920, she participated in the premiere of Albert Noelte’s opera “François Villon” in Karlsruhe. She later lived in Karlsruhe as a teacher. Her large dramatic soprano voice is particularly valued in Wagnerian repertoire. Records of the artist are available on Odeon.
