HENRIETTE GOTTLIEB (BERLIN, 1884 – ŁÓDŹ GHETTO, 2 JANUARY, 1942)

She made her debut in Plauen in 1909 and joined the Berlin Municipal Opera in 1913, where she remained until 1934. She was particularly noted as a Wagnerian interpreter, appearing at the Bayreuth Festivals from 1927 to 1930. In 1928, she was a guest in Amsterdam, and in 1929 she performed the role of Brünnhilde in Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, returning there in 1930 for one of her greatest successes in the Ring cycle. It was around this time that our Wagner excerpt with her was recorded.

She also took part in the premieres of Friedrich Koch’s Die Hügelmühle (Berlin, 1918) and Emil von Reznicek’s Holofernes (Berlin, 1923). Following the Nazi ban on Jewish performers, she remained in Berlin until her deportation to the Łódź Ghetto in 1941, where she died on 2 January 1942.
