MARGARETE TESCHEMACHER (COLOGNE, 3 MARCH, 1903 – BAD WIESSEE, 19 MAY, 1959)

She trained at the Cologne Conservatory and made her debut in 1923 at the Cologne Opera as Ruth in Eugen d’Albert’s Die toten Augen. In 1924, she achieved her first major success there as Micaëla in Carmen. Further engagements followed: 1925–26 at the Aachen City Theatre, 1926–28 at the Dortmund City Theatre, 1928–30 at the Mannheim National Theatre, and 1930–35 at the Stuttgart State Opera.

In 1935, she was engaged by the Dresden State Opera, where she enjoyed brilliant success both there and internationally. On October 15, 1938, she sang the title role in the world premiere of Richard Strauss’s Daphne at the Dresden State Opera, opposite Torsten Ralf. On October 31, 1942, she appeared there as Miranda in the world premiere of Heinrich Sutermeister’s Die Zauberinsel. In 1941, she sang the Countess in Le nozze di Figaro at the Salzburg Festival.

In 1934, she created the title role in Strauss’s Arabella for the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. In 1931 and 1936, she was celebrated at Covent Garden in London as the Countess in Le nozze di Figaro, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, Elsa in Lohengrin, and Eva in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. She also appeared as a guest at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, at the Chicago Opera, and at the State Operas of Berlin, Vienna, and Munich. In 1939 and 1941, she performed at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence.

Among her major roles were Senta in Der fliegende Holländer, the title role in Janáček’s Jenůfa, Minnie in Puccini’s La fanciulla del West, and the title role in Zandonai’s Francesca da Rimini. In 1943, she married the painter Richard Panzer (after the dissolution of her first marriage to the tenor Gustav Wünsche, born 1894). She remained engaged at the Dresden State Opera until 1946, and from 1937 to 1940 was concurrently associated with the Hamburg State Opera.

After the Second World War, from 1947 to 1952, she was under contract with the Düsseldorf Opera, where she sang roles such as Kundry in Parsifal and the Sacristan in Jenůfa. Throughout her career, she also appeared frequently in concert, oratorio, and lieder performances.

She died suddenly after a stroke. The brilliance of her lyric-dramatic voice and the breadth and depth of her characterization were widely admired.
