MARGARETHE BURCHARDT (BERLIN, GERMANY, 28 JUNE, 1880 – WINNENDEN, GERMANY, 7 FEBRUARY, 1947)

 

 

 

 

She began her stage career in 1902 at the Rostock City Theater. From there, she moved to the Hoftheater Schwerin (1904-1907). In Schwerin, she performed the title role in the premiere of Die vernarrte Prinzess by Oscar von Chelius on January 15, 1905. Between 1907 and 1911, she was engaged by the Hoftheater in Hanover, and from 1911 to 1920, she sang at the Hoftheater in Stuttgart. Notably, on October 25, 1912, she performed as Najade in the world premiere of Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos, and in 1913, she sang Nele in the premiere of Walter Braunfels’s Ulenspiegel.

She made guest appearances at the Court Opera in Dresden (1903), at the Wiesbaden Festival (1905), at the Court Theater in Karlsruhe (1910), and since 1905, at the Berlin Court Opera. She also appeared at Covent Garden in London in 1906 as Gutrune in Götterdämmerung and as Margiana in Der Barbier von Bagdad by P. Cornelius.

Her extensive stage repertoire included roles such as Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Agathe in Der Freischütz, Undine in Lortzing’s opera, Senta in Der fliegende Holländer, Elsa in Lohengrin, Eva in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Aida, Mimi in La Bohème, Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier, Marguerite in Faust by Gounod, Micaela in Carmen, the title role in Mignon by A. Thomas, Elsbeth in Leoncavallo’s Roland von Berlin, and Hanna Glawari in Lehár’s Die lustige Witwe.

She retired from the stage in 1920. Since 1908, she had been married to actor and director Kurt Junker (1878-1953), who worked in Stuttgart. She also performed under the name Margarethe Junker-Burchardt.
