Description
MARIE DIETRICH (WEINSBERG, GERMANY, 26 JANUARY, 1868 – BERLIN, GERMANY, 14 DECEMBER, 1939)
She began her musical education at the Stuttgart Conservatory under Ferdinand Jäger, who was renowned for his portrayal of Siegfried in Vienna. She also studied with the celebrated Pauline Viardot-Garcia in Paris.
Her operatic career commenced in 1888 at the Court Opera in Stuttgart. In 1891, she moved to Berlin, where she became the leading soprano of the Berlin Court Opera House. She was noted for her performances and was often compared to Emilie Herzog, a prominent star at the Kroll Opera House.
Dietrich’s stage career was marked by a preference for the more intimate settings of Berlin, and she avoided the competitive nature of larger venues. She made a notable appearance at Bayreuth in 1888 as the Flower Girl in Parsifal. She gave her farewell performance in 1912 as Marie in Waffenschmied by Lortzing and remained with the Court Opera House until 1915.
A shy and reserved individual, Dietrich chose not to pursue the more prominent prima donna roles to avoid competition. She was married to tenor Robert Philipp (1852-1933).
