Description

ZINAIDA JURJEVSKAJA (TARTU, ESTONIA, 10 JUNE, 1892 – ANDERMATT, 3 DECEMBER, 1925; NÉE LENKIN, MARRIED NAME ZINAIDA VON BREMER)

She left Russia with her family after the October Revolution of 1917 and studied singing in Berlin. In 1922 she made her debut at the Berlin State Opera in Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Golden Cockerel, achieving immediate success. Two years later, in 1924, she sang the title role in the premiere of Janáček’s Jenůfa at the same opera house, delivering a remarkable performance. In 1925 she appeared with the Berlin State Opera ensemble in Amsterdam as Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier.

Her life ended tragically. While on vacation in Switzerland, she took poison in a fit of depression and threw herself into the River Reuss. Her body was only discovered after a long time.

The voice of the singer, who died so young, was distinguished not only by flawless vocal technique but also by great subtlety of expression. Despite the brevity of her career, she left recordings with Parlophon (scenes from Jenůfa), Polydor, and Homochord.
