ADOLF GRÖBKE (HILDESHEIM, 26 MAY, 1872 – EPFACH, 16 SEPTEMBER, 1949)

 

 

 

 

He initially worked as a railroad employee before studying singing at the conservatory in Sangerhausen, Thuringia, under Schröder. In 1895, he made his debut at the Court Theater of Sangerhausen, and from 1896 to 1899, he was a soloist at the Stadttheater in Essen. From 1899 to 1905, Gröbke performed at the opera house in Frankfurt am Main. He likely sang the role of Parsifal at the Bayreuth Festival in 1901. In 1902, he appeared at the Berliner Hofoper, and from 1905 to 1910, he performed at the Court Theater in Hannover.

During the 1910-1911 season, Gröbke sang at the Vienna Court Opera, and from 1913 to 1918, he was part of the ensemble at the Court Theater in Schwerin. From 1918 to 1922, he appeared at the Municipal Theater in Krefeld, and during the 1922-1923 season, he performed at the Municipal Theater in Basel. He continued his career with guest performances until 1929, including a performance of Lohengrin in Schwerin.

In 1898, Gröbke made a guest appearance at the Berliner Theater des Westens, and from 1900 onwards, he sang several times at the Vienna Court Opera and the opera in Frankfurt am Main. He performed at the Court Opera in Berlin in 1904 and 1908, and in 1905, he made his debut at Covent Garden in London, singing in Tannhäuser. Gröbke also appeared at the Municipal Theater in Hamburg (1907), the Court Opera in Dresden (1911), the Opera House in Cologne (1920-1921, as Siegfried), and in Düsseldorf in 1926.

His stage roles included Tamino, Florestan, Max in Der Freischütz, Lionel in Martha, Rienzi, Erik, Tristan, Fra Diavolo (Auber), Eleazar in La Juive, José in Carmen, Manrico, Radames, Riccardo in Un ballo in maschera, Canio, Otello (Verdi), and Jean in Le prophète (Meyerbeer).
