In 1936, he was imprisoned for nine months on suspicion of homosexuality but was released later that same year. Following this, he moved to Berlin and joined the Theater der Jugend. From 1945 to 1948, and again in the 1950/51 season, he was a member of the Städtische Oper in West Berlin. In 1961, Greverus joined the Theater des Westens, and he retired in 1964.
