THEODOR RUDOLPH CARL CLEWING (SCHWERIN, 22 APRIL, 1884 – BADENWEILER, 15 MAY, 1954)

 

 

 

 

At first, he became an actor, working at the Municipal Theatres of Bromberg and Strasbourg, as well as from 1911 to 1920 at the Royal Theatre in Berlin. Since 1917, he studied singing under Francisco d’Andrade, Wilhelm Grüning, Ernst Grenzebach, and Wilhelm Flam in Berlin. He likely made his debut in 1920 and was engaged by the Berlin State Opera in 1922. During the 1924-25 season, he sang at the Bayreuth Festival in Wagner’s Meistersinger and Parsifal. In 1925, he appeared at the Vienna premiere of Lehár’s operetta Paganini at the Johann Strauss-Theatre. He also appeared in the German film Der fremde Vogel in 1911. By 1926, he retired from the stage and became a lecturer in music science in Berlin. From 1929, he was a professor at the Vienna Music Academy. From 1932 to 1945, he served as an artistic production manager at the sound record company Telefunken. He was also a renowned music researcher and publisher of folk songs.
