Description
CARL HARTMANN (SOLINGEN, 2 MAY, 1895 – MUNICH, 30 MAY, 1969)
He first worked in a razor factory in Solingen. There, he sang in several choirs and was discovered by a music critic from Cologne, who arranged for him to receive his first vocal training in Cologne. In 1921, he began formal studies with Richard Senff in Düsseldorf.
In 1928, he made his debut at the Stadttheater Wuppertal-Elberfeld as Tannhäuser. As early as 1930, while touring North America as a member of Johanna Gadski’s German Opera Company, he caused a sensation with his performance as Pedro in d’Albert’s Tiefland. He later made guest appearances in Chicago, St. Louis, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
Following the outbreak of the Second World War, he encountered difficulties returning to Germany and traveled via Japan. There, he appeared not only in several Wagner concerts but also in an adapted version of Lohengrin, which marked the Japanese premiere of the opera.
After the Second World War, he never returned to the operatic stage, although he continued to give recitals. He later opened a business dealing in Solingen steelware in Munich and eventually settled there.
