Description
EDUARD LICHTENSTEIN (KARLSBAD, 1 APRIL, 1889 – HAMBURG, 9 JANUARY, 1953)
Early Training: Eduard Lichtenstein, the son of tenor Joseph Lichtenstein (1860-1912), was trained at the Stern’sches Konservatorium in Berlin under Nikolaus Rothmühl.
Debut: He made his debut in 1908 at the Municipal Theatre in Hamburg, performing as Georg in Lortzing’s Waffenschmied. In 1912, he appeared in Hamburg in the premiere of F. Busoni’s opera Die Brautwahl.
Career: Lichtenstein remained in Hamburg until 1915, gaining acclaim as a Tenor Buffo. His star role was David in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, which he also performed at Covent Garden in London in 1910. In 1910, he studied again under Jean de Reszke in Paris. He performed at the Gura-Sommeroper and was engaged by the Berlin Städtische Oper in 1915. In 1917, he gained notable success in the operetta Der Feldprediger by Millöcker, leading to engagements in operetta performances in Berlin under impresario Haller. Lichtenstein became renowned as an operetta singer, performing alongside Richard Tauber and excelling in Lehár’s Paganini. He appeared in the Berlin premieres of Walter Kollo’s operettas Drei alte Schachteln (1918), Die Vielgeliebte (1919), Der Vetter aus Dingsda (1921), and Die hellblauen Schwestern (1925).
Further Performances: In 1933, due to his Jewish heritage, Lichtenstein was forced to leave Germany. He emigrated to Holland and became a singing teacher at the Amsterdam Conservatoire. He undertook successful concert tours in Holland, Belgium, and Switzerland. In 1950, he resumed performing in operettas and concerts, including engagements in Hamburg and Switzerland.
Final Years: Lichtenstein died suddenly in Hamburg, one hour after a commemorative concert for his friend Richard Tauber. He was married first to singer Elisabeth Balzer and then to actress Hilde Woerner.
