ERIK ENDERLEIN (DRESDEN, 18 FEBRUARY, 1887 – BERLIN, 18 APRIL, 1949)
Erik Enderlein (real name: Emil Enderlein) trained as a lyric tenor and began his professional career in 1912 at the Court Opera in Dresden, where he stayed until 1917. In the 1917-1918 season, he was engaged by the Municipal Theater of Chemnitz.
After his voice transitioned to Heldentenor in 1918, he performed at the Staatstheater in Schwerin. From 1919 to 1926, he was a prominent member of the ensemble at the Stadttheater in Hamburg. He continued to make a significant impact after moving to the Städtische Oper in Berlin in 1926, where he remained until 1928.
Notably, Enderlein performed at the Bayreuth Festival in 1925 as Walther von Stolzing in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. In the 1927-1928 season, he appeared at the Waldoper in Sopot as Parsifal and as Siegfried in Götterdämmerung. Following his Bayreuth engagements, he adopted the stage name Erik.
His career took him to the Staatsoper in Vienna from 1926 to 1929 and to the Nationaltheater in Mannheim from 1931 to 1933. He also performed internationally at prestigious venues: the Teatro Real in Rome (1926), the Stadttheater in Basel (1928), Covent Garden Opera in London (1929, as Lohengrin and Tristan), the Royal Opera in Copenhagen (1929), the Opera House of Geneva (1930), and the opera houses of Belgrade and Zagreb (1930). In 1934, he appeared at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo.
After retiring from the stage, he became a singing teacher in Berlin, where he was still active in 1947.
