He participated in stage performances as a child and initially intended to become a businessman, but his vocal talent was discovered while singing in a male quartet. His career was supported by the Mannheim court conductor Köhler, who arranged for his engagement at the Mannheim National Theater. There, he made his debut as Tamino in 1904. During his time in Mannheim, which lasted until 1912, he continued his studies at the conservatory and later became a student of Dora Erl in Dresden. Guest performances in major German musical cities during this period helped establish his reputation.

In 1909, he performed Parsifal, Lohengrin, and Froh in Das Rheingold at the Bayreuth Festival, where his performances were particularly praised by Cosima Wagner. In 1912, he was appointed to the Dresden Court Opera (later the Dresden State Opera), where he remained the leading heroic and Wagnerian tenor until his retirement from the stage in 1929. Notably, he participated in the premieres of Richard Strauss’s operas Ariadne auf Naxos (1912) and Die Frau ohne Schatten (1919).

He also made guest appearances at London’s Covent Garden Opera, the court operas in Vienna (1904 and 1910) and Munich (1908), the Stuttgart Court Theater (1908 and 1910), the Deutsches Theater in Prague (1910), Bremen (1910), Zurich (1915), and Frankfurt am Main (1910). From 1922 onwards, he frequently performed at the Zoppot Festival, notably as Siegfried in Der Ring des Nibelungen. After initially working as a teacher in Dresden, he later settled in Köthen, Saxony.
