FRITZ WERNER (VIENNA, 18 NOVEMBER, 1871 – BAD HALL, 22 SEPTEMBER, 1940)

His real name was Fritz Herz, and he was the son of a Viennese dentist. He trained under pedagogue Hermann Grün in Vienna, and his first role was in 1892 at the Rudolfsheimer Volkstheater in Vienna, where he performed in Les dragons de Villars by Maillart. He later guest-starred in Ischl as Canio in Pagliacci and Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana. From 1893 to 1896, he was engaged as the first Tenor-Buffo by the theaters of Cologne and Bonn. He then turned to operetta and joined the Theater an der Wien in 1896, where he achieved notable success in the operetta Der Schmetterling (as Rosefleur) by Weinberger.

In 1898, under impresario Jauner, he participated in a Russian tour with a Viennese operetta ensemble. He also made guest performances at the Berliner Theater des Westens in the opera Der Husar by I. Brüll. In Vienna, he appeared 200 times at the Carl Theater as Niki in the operetta Ein Walzertraum by Oscar Strauss. He performed in Munich, Stuttgart, Mannheim, and Karlsruhe, and from 1900 to 1902 and again from 1904 to 1906, he was a member of the Theater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich. During the 1902-1903 season, he was engaged at the Viennese Carl Theater, where he also performed during the 1907-1910 seasons.

In the 1913-1914 season, he worked as both a singer and director at the Viennese Bürgertheater and later performed at the Metropoltheater in Berlin, the Operettentheater in Hamburg, and in the 1924-1925 season at the Corso-Theater in Zürich. Due to a serious illness, he retired in 1926.

He appeared in numerous operetta premieres, including Der Frauenfresser by E. Eysler (Bürgertheater Wien, 1911), Der lachende Ehemann by the same composer (Bürgertheater Wien, 1913), Die Winzerbraut by O. Nedbal (Theater an der Wien, 1916), Das Hollandweibchen by E. Kálmán (Johann Strauß-Theater Wien, 1920), Ein Walzertraum (Carl-Theater, 1907), Rund um die Liebe by Oscar Strauss (Johann Strauß-Theater, 1914), and the operetta Mädi by Robert Stolz (Berlin Theater, 1920).
