HANS CLEMENS (GELSENKIRCHEN JULY 27, 1890 – MONTROSE, COLORADO AUGUST 25, 1958)

 

 

 

 

Early Career: He began his stage career in 1911 at the Cologne Opera. In 1914, he participated in the world premiere of E. Humperdinck’s Die Marketenderin.

Marriage: He married soprano Wanda Achsel (1886–1977), though they separated in 1933.

Career Developments: In 1921, he left his position in Cologne and performed at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin until 1922. He made a guest appearance at the Vienna State Opera in 1922 and at the Wagner Festival in Paris in 1927 as Loge in Rheingold.

London and New York: He made successful guest appearances at Covent Garden in London during the 1925–1929 seasons and again in 1935. Notable performances included David in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Loge. In 1930, he joined the Metropolitan Opera in New York, making his debut as Steuermann in Der fliegende Holländer. He remained at the Metropolitan Opera until 1938, specializing in tenor buffo roles.

San Francisco and Los Angeles: From 1935 to 1939, he was a guest at the San Francisco Opera, where he debuted as Loge and performed as Leopold in La Juive, Don Basilio in Le Nozze di Figaro, and Jacquino in Fidelio. He also appeared in Los Angeles, where he later taught singing.
