Description

HANS TÄNZLER (BERLIN, 23 SEPTEMBER, 1879 – BERLIN, 25 SEPTEMBER, 1953)

First, he worked in his father’s business as a Berlin vintner. He then received education in the catering trade in Paris and London and began architectural studies. However, upon discovering his vocal talent, he pursued singing lessons with Teresa Emrich, Jacques Stückgold, and H. Schmidt in Berlin.

He made his debut in 1902 at the Opera House of Cologne in F. von Flotow’s Martha. During the 1903-05 seasons, he performed at the Municipal Theatre of Gdansk, in the 1905-06 season in Elberfeld, and from 1906-07 in Graz. From 1907-14, Tänzler was a member of the Court Theatre of Karlsruhe. In 1914, he was engaged by the Court Theatre of Brunswick, where he performed until 1918.

As a guest, he appeared at the Dresden Court Opera (1903), Municipal Theatre of Hamburg (1905), in the 1907-08 season in Frankfurt a. M., in 1910 at the German Theatre of Prague, in 1911 at the Court Theatre of Wiesbaden, and in 1914 at the Berlin Court Opera. He also guested at the Court Opera of Munich (1907-09), Vienna Court Opera (1906, 1908, 1912), and performed in Paris, Budapest, Warsaw, Spain, and Russia. In 1912, he sang at the Grand Opéra in Paris in Tristan und Isolde.

During the 1920s, Tänzler moved to North America and settled in Los Angeles as a pedagogue. From 1927-29, he lived in Berlin and continued to guest at the Berlin State Opera, including performances as Tristan and in Evangelimann by W. Kienzl (1927). From 1929-31, he participated in an American tour with the German Opera Company, achieving great success in R. Wagner’s operas. He remained first in Los Angeles, then in San Diego (California) as a pedagogue. Later, he worked to construct an opera house in Los Angeles, for which he had designed the architectural plans, though the project was ultimately not realized.
