HERMANN SCHRAMM (BERLIN, FEBRUARY, 7, 1871 – FRANKFURT AM MAIN, 14 DECEMBER, 1951)

 

 

 

 

Like his father, he initially became a merchant, but later studied singing and made his debut in 1895 at the Wroclaw Opera House as Gomez in Das Nachtlager in Granada by C. Kreutzer. During the 1896-1900 seasons, he worked as a lyric tenor at the Cologne Opera House, but eventually transitioned to performing exclusively in buffo roles. He became a highly respected member of the Frankfurt am Main Opera House, where he performed from 1900 to 1933. On the German stage, he was particularly renowned for his portrayals of Mime in Wagner’s Ring cycle and David in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. In 1899, he also sang the role of David at the Bayreuth Festival.

That same year, he made guest appearances at London’s Covent Garden Opera. His career also took him to prominent stages in Brussels, Paris, and Holland. In 1912, he performed in Amsterdam in the Dutch premiere of Humperdinck’s opera Königskinder.

He made additional guest appearances at the Court Operas of Berlin (1897), Dresden (1898-99), and Munich (1898), as well as at the Court Theaters of Hanover (1899), Wiesbaden (from 1900), Karlsruhe (from 1906), and Mannheim (1900). From 1900, he also performed at the City Theater of Zurich. In the 1923-1924 season, he participated in the North American tour of German Opera.

As a Jew, he was forced to retire from the stage in Frankfurt in 1934 due to Nazi persecution, but he managed to survive in Frankfurt during the Nazi era. His son, Friedrich Schramm (1900-1981), served as the director of the Stadttheater in Basel for many years and later as the director of the Staatstheater in Wiesbaden.
