JOSEF KALENBERG (KÖLN-EHRENFELD, 7 JANUARY, 1886 – VIENNA, 8 NOVEMBER, 1961)

First, he became an electrical engineer, then studied singing in Cologne. In 1911, he made his debut at the Opera House in Cologne as Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana. In the 1912-16 seasons, he worked at the Municipal Theatre of Krefeld, and in the 1919-21 seasons at the Municipal Theatre of Wuppertal-Barmen. From 1921-25, he was at the Opera House of Düsseldorf, and in the 1925-27 seasons, at the Opera House of Cologne.

He made his debut at the Vienna State Opera as Parsifal in 1927 and sang there until 1942. On June 10, 1931, he performed in the premiere of Kurt Weill’s Die Bakchantinnen in Vienna. That same year, he took on the title role in a new production of W. A. Mozart’s Idomeneo. He sang at the Salzburg Festival in 1928 as Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, in the 1928-30 seasons as Florestan in Fidelio, and in the 1935-36 season as Tristan.

At the Zoppot Festival, he appeared in 1929 as Walther von Stolzing, in 1933 as Florestan and Tannhäuser. He also made guest appearances at the German Theatre in Brünn (1933), the Opera House in Antwerp (1935), and the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona (1940). He continued performing, including singing the role of Tristan at the Vienna People’s Opera in 1949. His son, Harry Kalenberg, became known as an actor and director.
