JUAN SPIWAK (PHILADELPHIA, 28 APRIL, 1883 – NEW YORK, 15 MARCH, 1946)
Juan Spiwak (also spelled Spivak) was born in Philadelphia in 1883. His first notable engagement was at the Vienna Volksoper, where he performed from 1907 to 1909. During this time, he often appeared with the young Maria Jeritza, who was only 20 years old when the duet on this disc was recorded.
From 1909 to 1910, he sang with the Vienna Hofoper, followed by engagements at Düsseldorf (1910-11), Olmütz (1911-12), Bremen (1912-15), and Nürnberg (1915-22), where he also served as a stage director. In 1927-28, he performed with the Berlin Komische Oper. After this period, he retired from the stage and became a voice teacher in Berlin.
Spiwak left Germany in 1933 due to political reasons and settled in New York, where he continued his teaching career. He passed away in New York in 1946. Spiwak made one recording in Hebrew with a synagogue choir in 1908.
