LORENZ FEHENBERGER (UPPER BAVARIA, GERMANY, AUGUST 24, 1912 – MUNICH, GERMANY, JULY 29, 1984)
He studied singing under Elisabeth Wolff in Munich and made his debut in 1939 at the Stadttheater in Graz in R. Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier. From 1941 to 1945, he was engaged by the Staatsoper in Dresden, and in 1946, he joined the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich.
On August 9, 1949, at the Salzburg Festival, he sang the role of Haemon in the premiere of Carl Orff’s opera Antigonae. At the same festival, he performed as a soloist in Rossini’s Stabat Mater (1949 and 1962). He returned to Salzburg in 1951 for Haydn’s The Creation and, two years later, sang in Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus. In subsequent years, he participated in performances of Beethoven’s Christus am Ölberge (1964) and Mozart’s Requiem (1967). In 1949, he also performed a small role in Die Zauberflöte.
Guest performances took him to renowned opera houses in Italy, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Scandinavia, and South America, including the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires (1951). At the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in 1951, he sang the role of Golo in Schumann’s Genoveva (the Italian premiere of this opera). During the 1951–1952 season, he appeared in several roles at the Arena di Verona.
In 1953, he performed at Covent Garden, including the role of Apollo in the UK premiere of R. Strauss’s Die Liebe der Danaë. In 1976, he sang at the Bayerische Staatsoper in the premiere of Josef Tal’s opera Die Versuchung. His final appearance in Munich was in 1977, performing in Der Rosenkavalier.
His repertoire included leading roles such as Radames in Aida, Don José in Carmen, Lohengrin, the Duke in Rigoletto, Walther von Stolzing in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Alvaro in La forza del destino, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, and Cavaradossi in Tosca.
