MARIAN ALMA (ZALESZCZYKI, POLAND 3. NOVEMBER 1860 – BERLIN, GERMANY 1937 or 1938)

He first studied at the Lviv Polytechnic before turning to singing, where he studied under Walery Wysocki in Lviv. He made his debut there in 1878 as Lorenzo in D. Auber’s Fra Diavolo and remained with this opera house until 1884. Following his time in Lviv, he performed under the surname Manoli during the 1884-85 season at the Opera House in Olmütz, though he eventually reverted to his original name.

His career continued at several prominent opera houses: he was at the Vienna Court Opera in the 1885-86 season, the Municipal Theatre of Mainz from 1886-88, the Berlin Court Opera during the 1888-90 seasons, the Opera House of Düsseldorf from 1890-93, the Opera House of Wroclaw in the 1893-94 season, and the Municipal Theatre of Magdeburg in the 1894-95 season. In 1895, he returned to the Berlin Court Opera, where he performed until 1914. After 1900, he primarily took on comprimario roles.

He also made guest appearances at various opera houses, including those in Warsaw and Kraków in 1895, and Prague. In 1887, he sang at the Berlin Krolloper, the Court Theatre in Schwerin, and in 1902 at the Opera House of Leipzig. Notably, he appeared at the Berlin Court Opera in the premiere of R. Leoncavallo’s opera Der Roland von Berlin in 1904 and in the Berlin premiere of Der Rosenkavalier in 1911.

He continued his career at the Berlin Court Opera until 1914, after which he became a singing teacher in Berlin.

His daughter Helene Alma was also active as a singer; she appeared about 1910 in Berlin, later in the USA.
