MAX LIPMANN (STOLZENAU A. WESER, 1881 – ?)

 

 

 

 

He debuted in 1905 at the Stadttheater in Heilbronn as Max in Der Freischütz, later performing extensively as a concert and oratorio singer. His operatic career truly began in 1909 with an engagement at the Stadttheater in Aachen. He went on to give guest performances, including a notable appearance in 1912 at Teatro alla Scala in Milan as David in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and during the 1912-1913 season at the Boston Opera in the USA.

From 1913 to 1923, he was a principal tenor at the Court Theatre and National Theatre in Mannheim. In the 1923-1924 season, he joined a German opera troupe on a tour of North America. After 1924, he returned to concert singing while still performing occasionally on the Mannheim opera stage until 1932. His operatic repertoire was versatile, including roles such as Belmonte in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, Max in Der Freischütz, Pedro in Tiefland, Manrico in Il Trovatore, Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana, Des Grieux in Manon Lescaut, and Rodolfo in La Bohème.

With the rise of anti-Semitic policies in 1933, he could no longer perform in German opera houses due to his Jewish heritage.
