OSCAR BRAUN (VIENNA, 16 FEBRUARY, 1867 – BUDAPEST, 15 APRIL, 1944)

He completed his training in Vienna and began his opera career in 1889 at the Carl Theater in Vienna. In 1891, he joined the Cologne Opera House, where he participated in the premiere of Nicola Spinelli’s opera A basso porto in 1894. He gained recognition as the first lyric tenor at the Frankfurt am Main Opera House in 1895, where he performed an extensive repertoire and also ventured into operetta. In 1898, he pursued further studies in Paris. He sang at the Theater des Westens in Berlin during the 1898–1900 and 1902–1903 seasons, and at the Berlin Court Opera in the 1900–1901 season. From 1903 to 1907, he performed operettas at the Central Theater in Berlin, followed by engagements at the New Operetta Theater in Berlin from 1907 to 1911, and guest appearances as an operetta singer, including the 1912–1913 season in Amsterdam. Around 1910, he toured with the Oscar Braun Operetta Society, which he founded. He also appeared at the Komische Oper in Berlin (1915–1920) and at the Kurtheater in Freudenstadt (1922–1923).

He made guest appearances in various opera houses, including the Court Opera in Dresden and the Theater in Brünn (1902), the Leipzig Opera House (1905), the Berlin Kroll Opera (1908, as Manrico in Il Trovatore), and the Schwerin Court Theater (1909). In the 1907–1908 season, he performed at the Leipzig New Operetta Theater. His roles included Gomez in Das Nachtlager von Granada by C. Kreutzer, Lyonel in Martha, Peter Iwanow in Zar und Zimmermann, Fra Diavolo by Auber, Alfredo in La Traviata, David in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Jan in Der Bettelstudent by Millöcker, Barinkay in Der Zigeunerbaron, and Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus by J. Strauss. Oscar Braun, who was of Jewish descent, was still living in Berlin in 1941, but his fate after that remains unknown.
