Description

BORIS KROYT (BORN BENZION JOSEPH ABRAMOVICH KROYT, ENGLISH:  BORIS KROYT; JUNE 23, 1897, ODESSA – NOVEMBER 15, 1969, NEW YORK) WAS A GERMAN – AMERICAN VIOLINIST AND VIOLIST OF RUSSIAN ORIGIN.

Benzion Kroyt was born on June 10 (Old Style), 1897, in Odessa, to the family of the Olyk tradesman Joseph-Abram Moshkovich Kroyt and Tzipa Kroyt. He had a younger brother, Meer-Itzhak (born in 1902). Kroyt made his debut as a violinist at the age of nine.

At the age of ten, he was sent to Berlin to continue his musical education at the Stern Conservatory, where he studied with Alexander Fidelman, as well as Pavel Yuon and Wilhelm Klatte. At twelve, he made his debut as a violist, replacing a departing player in his teacher’s string quartet.

From 1912 onward, Kroyt toured as both a soloist and an ensemble musician. Between 1924 and 1936, he led his own string quartet and also performed and recorded in a piano trio with Karol Schröter and Arnold Földessy.

In 1936, he joined the renowned Budapest Quartet and, like the other members of the ensemble, settled in the United States from 1937. His work with the Budapest Quartet formed the core of Kroyt’s musical career, though he also made numerous other chamber recordings, including one with pianist Arthur Balsam.
