Description
KARL JOHANNES MAX STRUB (MAINZ, SEPTEMBER 28, 1900 – BAD ENHAUSEN, MARCH 23, 1966)
He studied at the Cologne Conservatory under Bram Eldering. After completing his education, he was invited by Fritz Busch to the position of concertmaster at the Stuttgart Opera, and later worked in Dresden. From 1924 to 1928, he taught at the Weimar School of Music, and subsequently, at the invitation of Otto Klemperer, moved to Berlin. From 1934 to 1945, he taught at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik. After the end of World War II, he became one of the founders of the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold; among his students was Lukas David.
Strub was particularly renowned as an ensemble musician. Around the turn of the 1920s and 1930s, a string quartet consisting of Strub, Josef Krips, Rudolf Nöll, and Hans Schrader enjoyed considerable popularity. After 1934, when the composition of the German musical elite changed significantly due to the flight or arrest of Jewish musicians, a new quartet was formed, featuring Strub, Jost Raba, Walter Trampler, and Ludwig Hölscher, as well as a piano trio consisting of Strub, Hölscher, and Elly Ney. From 1938, Strub also participated in another popular trio with Adrian Eschbacher and Gaspar Cassadó. Finally, in the 1950s, a trio of professors from the new conservatory—Strub, Hans Münch-Holland, and Hans Richter-Haaser—performed successfully in Detmold.
Among the premieres performed by Strub were Sonata No. 2 for violin and piano by Paul Hindemith (1920, with Eduard Zuckmayer), the Duet for Violin and Cello with Small Orchestra by Hans Pfitzner (1937, with Ludwig Hölscher, conducted by the composer), his String Quartet in C Minor (1942), Burletta for violin and orchestra by Paul Juon (1940), and a number of other works.
