GIUSEPPE LUGO (ISOLA DELLA SCALA, VERONA, 2. 11. 1898  † MILAN, 18. 9. 1980)

 

 

 

 

  • Early Training: He started his vocal training with Tenaglia in Milan before moving to Belgium. There, he continued his studies with Gaudier and began his career performing in a local cafe in Charleroi.
  • Debut and Career: He made his debut as Cavaradossi in Tosca at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in 1930. Lugo performed at this opera house and at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels until 1936. His career included guest appearances at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo in 1933 and at Covent Garden in London, where he also sang the role of Cavaradossi. In 1938, he performed as Nadir in Les Pêcheurs de perles at the Teatro alla Scala.
  • Further Performances: He appeared at the Arena di Verona from 1937 to 1939 and sang the title role in J. Massenet’s Werther at the Opéra-Comique in the 1000th performance of this opera in 1939.
