PIERRE CORNUBERT (PARIS, FRANCE, 14 MAY, 1863 – PARIS, FRANCE, 27 JUNE, 1922)

 

 

 

 

He studied at the Paris Conservatoire and made his debut in 1887 at the Opéra-Comique as Daniel in Le châlet by Adam. In 1889, Cornubert created the role of the Byzantine Herald in the premiere of Massenet’s Esclarmonde. His early career saw him performing in various French cities, including Rouen, Marseille, and Montpellier.

In 1899, he embarked on an international career, performing at the Teatro Tacón in Havana and the Teatro Rinascimento in Mexico City. He was engaged by the Metropolitan Opera in New York, making his debut in 1900 as Vasco da Gama in Meyerbeer’s L’Africaine. At the Met, he also performed in Gli Ugonotti, Roméo et Juliette, Carmen, and Pagliacci.

In 1904, Cornubert, as a member of the San Carlo Opera Company, made guest appearances at Covent Garden in London. From 1899 to 1900, he performed at the Teatro Lirico in Milan, where he appeared in Andrea Chénier alongside Mario Sammarco and Eva Tetrazzini, and in Guglielmo Ratcliff with Febea Strakosch and Giuseppe Pacini. He also performed at the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele in Turin, where he was part of the cast of Meyerbeer’s L’Africaine with Mary D’Arneiro and Alessandro Arcangeli.

His career continued with performances in Cairo in 1903 and in Oporto at the Teatro S. João in Andrea Chénier in 1905. In 1919, he became a professor at the Paris Conservatoire. His wife, Suzanne Cornubert, was also an opera singer.

He made his debut at the Opéra-Comique in 1888, performing the role of Walter in Jules Barbier’s Amoureux de Catherine. In 1895, he appeared at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo as Fernand in La Favorite, performing alongside Deschamps-Jehin and Melchissèdec. His repertoire included notable roles such as Gérald in Lakmé, Wilhelm Meister in Mignon, Fernand in La Favorite, Nadir in Les pêcheurs de perles, and Alfredo in La Traviata.

GEORGES GENIN (LYON, 30 DECEMBER, 1899 – TORREMOLINOS, SPAIN, FEBRUARY, 1971)

 

 

 

 

He received his early vocal training in Lyon, his father’s hometown, and made his professional debut there in 1924. Shortly after, he was engaged by the Opéra-Comique in Paris, where he debuted as Hadji in Delibes’ Lakmé. Initially performing comprimario roles, such as Beppe in Pagliacci and Frédéric in Mignon, he quickly advanced in his career.

In 1925, he was engaged by the Paris Grand Opéra, and by 1931, he began performing principal roles, including the Duke in Rigoletto, Roméo in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, and Radames in Aida. He also took on lead roles at the Opéra-Comique, such as Rodolfo in La Bohème, Des Grieux in Massenet’s Manon, Vincent in Gounod’s Mireille, Werther in Massenet’s Werther, José in Carmen, and Daniel in Adam’s Le chalet.

His career at the Paris Grand Opéra spanned until 1950, and he made guest appearances at the Opera House of Monte Carlo and the Opera House of Antwerp. After retiring from the stage, he became a respected pedagogue, teaching at the Conservatoire of Metz from 1954 until 1970.

RAOUL GIRARD (PARIS 1893 – ?)

 

 

 

He made his debut at the Opera-Comique, Paris, in 1928 as Julien in ‘’Louise’’, and sang most of the French-Italian lyric repertory. He was married to Mlle Rainal, a ballerina of the Opera-Comique.
