DMITRI BUKHTOYAROV (BUCHTOJAROW) (ROSTOV-ON-DON, 1866 – PETROGRAD, 1918)
He was born in Rostov-on-Don into a family of locksmith. He studied singing at the St. Petersburg Conservatory under the tutelage of S. Gabel. In 1896, he made his operatic debut with A. Tsereteli’s company in Kharkov, performing the role of Gremin in Eugene Onegin. From 1897 to 1918, he was a soloist at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, where his best roles included Susanin (A Life for the Tsar by M. Glinka), Farlaf (Ruslan and Ludmila by Glinka), the Miller (The Mermaid by Dargomyzhsky), Mephistopheles (Faust by C. Gounod), the Demon in A. Rubinstein’s Demon, and Dobrynya Nikitich in A. Gretchaninov’s Dobrynya Nikitich.
At the Mariinsky Theatre, he also participated in productions of Puccini’s La Bohème, singing the role of Schaunard, and Arensky’s Nal and Damayanti. He toured with N. Figner’s troupe, performing in cities such as Odessa, Penza, and Samara, and also appeared at the Bolshoi Theatre, as well as in Riga, Baku, Kiev, Odessa, and other cities. He passed away from tuberculosis in St. Petersburg in 1918.
