Description
YIANNIS ANGELOPOULOS (EXARCHEIA, ATHENS, GREECE, 21 JANUARY, 1881 – PIRAEUS, GREECE, 5 DECEMBER, 1943)
He studied singing at the New Odeon Conservatory in Athens starting in 1903. He made his debut in 1906 on the Greek island of Syros as Ourrias in Gounod’s Mireille. Known for possessing one of the greatest voices heard on Greek lyric stages, he was highly popular.
In 1913, he performed with great success in Rigoletto and Ernani in Bucharest. Between 1920 and 1923, he sang in various Italian cities including Pisa, Brescia, Treviso, Palermo, Florence, and Rome. Until 1920, he was a member of the “Greek Melodrama” company in Greece.
His potential for a major international career was curtailed when he chose to return to Greece. This decision was influenced by the unstable political climate in Italy and his objections to Mussolini’s attacks on the island of Corfu.
