TANDY MACKENZIE (MAUI, HAWAIIAN ISLANDS, MARCH 10, 1892 – LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, USA, NOVEMBER 9, 1963)

 

 

 

 

He was the first operatic tenor from the Hawaiian Islands to achieve international fame. His musical journey began at Kamehameha Schools, where he first learned to read music. Pursuing advanced vocal studies in New York, Paris, and Milan, he made his professional debut as part of a quartet in Bird of Paradise in 1915. His operatic debut followed in 1929 as Rodolfo in La Bohème at the Théâtre of Cannes.

His impressive career took him from the stages of San Francisco to Prague, and he also made numerous recordings, performed on radio, and appeared in films such as San Francisco, Anthony Adverse, Going to Town, and There’s Magic in Music. Although he spent little time in Hawaii, he frequently included Hawaiian songs in his performances, showcasing his deep connection to his heritage and establishing himself as a revered interpreter of Hawaiian music.
